Errors and Omissions

Subsequent to the publication of the report, several errors and typographical mistakes have been noticed. Of these, a small number of important cases have been identified for which the meaning of the report needs to be made clear.


Please find below a list of important corrections, given in page order.

Main report

Page 98, Section 4.2.5.2 under Lung and Page 261, Section 7.4.5.2:
The final sentence of the bold text summary should read:
'There is evidence suggesting that fruits probably protect against lung cancer.'


Page 106, Section 4.2.5.4 under Pancreas and Page 273, Section 7.6.5.2:
The final sentence of the bold text summary should read:
'There is evidence suggesting that foods containing folate probably protect against pancreatic cancer.'


Page 120, Section 4.3.5.1.1 Red meat, under colorectum
Second paragraph, first sentence should read:
'All except one of the cohort studies that reported analyses of risk for the highest intake group when compared to the lowest showed increased risk (figure 4.3.1),8-24'


Page 120, Figure 4.3.1
Pietinen 1999 Men data should be 0.9 (0.6 - 1.3)
Norat should say from 2005.
Wei data (both for Men and Women) should say from 2004.
Philips 2003 data should be removed.
Slattery 2001 Women should be Bostick 1994 Women

Page 121, Section 4.3.5.1.1 Red meat, under colorectum (also see page 284 error)
The sentence beginning on line 2 should read:
' The summary effect estimates were 1.43 (95% CI 1.05-1.94) per time/day and 1.29 (95% CI 0.94-1.78) per 100g/day, respectively (figures 4.3.2 and 4.3.3). There was moderate heterogeneity in both analyses.'

Page 176, Section 4.9.3.2:
Lines 8-11 should read:
'Plasticisers such as phthalates, used in the manufacture of these polymers, can also migrate into foods and drinks at low concentrations. When administered at high doses these can be carcinogenic in experimental animals.'


Page 179, Dietary constituents and supplements, and the risk of cancer matrix:
Decreased risk, exposure column: Alpha-tocopherol - superscript should be '6'
Decreased risk, cancer site column: Lung and colorectum should not have superscript numbers
Increased risk, exposure column: Selenium supplements - superscript should be '3'

In the Footnotes:
2. Should read: ' The evidence is derived from studies using supplements at a dose of 200mg/day'

6. Should read: ' The evidence is derived from studies using supplements at a dose of 50mg/day'

Page 287, Section 7.9.5.18 Selenium, first paragraph:
Lines 2-4 should read:
'The trial showed a statistically significant decreased risk with a daily supplement of 200µg of selenium.'
