The science behind the CUP

The CUP develops the work of the WCRF global network’s groundbreaking First and Second Expert Reports and represents our ongoing commitment to ensuring people always have access to cancer prevention recommendations based on the latest research.

Seventeen systematic literature reviews (SLRs) were carried out for the Second Expert Report. Initially, more than half a million research papers were identified. These were screened down using a rigorous method to 7,000 papers that were relevant and used in the Report.

The Second Expert Report sets out public health goals and personal Recommendations for Cancer Prevention.

These goals and recommendations were made by an Expert Panel of 21 world-renowned scientists who reviewed the findings of the SLRs and made judgements based on the available body of evidence.

The Second Expert Report took six years to produce. Instead of repeating the extensive task of conducting multiple SLRs , the WCRF global network developed the CUP so that updates to the evidence database can be made as soon as new studies are published.

Just like the Second Expert Report, an independent panel of experts, chaired by Professor Alan Jackson, is responsible for reviewing the CUP findings and for making judgements and recommendations based on the body of scientific evidence.
